Notebook Drive(NBD) in Karnataka

NBD Driven by
Chandrashekar and SAFE / PARASPARA NGO group
Drive Description and support needed

Dear Friends,

My company is already participating in this drive. I saw this on my company news board and since most of us are already involved in such activities, I decided to take this up too. Just like what we contributed for Gujarat Earthquake fund, pl. come forward and help on this too. This time, I am in India and I am more confident than ever that we, together, can make a big and meaningful difference for our country.

Here is an attempt towards helping under-privileged students in the Govt. Schools of Karnataka.

There are around 49,000 Govt. schools in Karnataka each having about 100 under-privileged students. Government aims at providing mid-day meals, uniforms & textbooks to these students.  Yet, the lack of support towards notebooks affects them. With at least 5 notebooks for each of them, we would need more than 2.5 crore notebooks.

Here is a drive towards collecting notebooks for these students. Liberally donate notebooks towards this cause and be part of the drive.

For more information, feel free to communicate with the contacts mentioned below.

Let us join hands and take a step towards a brighter tomorrow.

I am planning to buy and collect notebooks over the next one month. Meanwhile, I also plan to talk to govt. school headmaster and identify the needy students. The dealine I have set is Indian Independence Day Aug 15th and will pass on all our donations on Aug 15th 2002 to the needy students.

If you are not living in bangalore, but if you are interested to help the notebook drive, please pass on your donations, notebooks through your friends are relatives. Please note that, we prefer notebooks only. All cash donations will be used towards purchase of notebooks.

Enquiries may be sent to : help_educate_children@yahoo.co.in

Thank you very much,

Chandrashekar.

Here are some FAQs

1. Whats Notebooke drive (NBD) ?
We donate notebooks to under-previleged school children in the  govt. schools of Karnataka.

2. Why we, whats the Govt. doing :-)
Well, lets be pragmatic, and try to reach the needy students. The Govt. has programmes for providing textbooks, uniforms & mid-day meals.

3. Any target of the number of notebooks to be collected by us ?
We would need 2.5 crore books to reach to all schools in the state.  Right now, we give our best, and collect as much as possible, lets go all out.

4. 2.5 crore, how ?
We have 49,000 govt. schools, assuming atleast 100 needy kids, and  5 books for each.

5. Whoz spearheading this campaign ?
SAFE - State Alliance for Education -a group of activists & NGO's  working on ensuring quality elementary education for all. The state convenor of SAFE is KC Venkatesh, whoz also a director of Paraspara Trust (more on SAFE in another mail).

6. How can I donate?

Donate notebooks. (preferably newly bought ones. Please keep in mind that the child receiving it should benefit ultimately. In case you
are donating used ones, please make sure it is in good condition after removing the used portions of the notebook.)
Drop them at my house or send it thru your friends. Company notebooks will not be accepted.

7. How would the volunteer go 'bout.
* Collect the notebooks donated
* Collect the money and buy the notebooks

8. What happens after collection ?
     Two options.

      1. We pass them on to SAFE who would pass it on to various schools.
      2. If there are interested juntha with you, contact some govt. school nearby, talk to the headmaster, ask him to identify the needy kids, and pass the books to them.

9. What kind of notebooks ?
    New notebooks are prefered.
Well, lets have the simple school notebooks - ruled preferable - of  the Lekhak variety, and not the long ones.

10. Income Tax certificate ?
For those interested donating in large numbers - more than 100 books - 80G of the income Tax Act certificate is available if necessary from SAFE/Paraspara.

Save Elliots beach in Adyar, Madras

Problem reported by
Param
Problem description
Hi I have seen people littering the Elliots beach in our locality very often without any remorse. This beach is one of the popular hang out spot and its better to keep it clean. As i know from childhood days "Prevention is better than cure !". Hence if we instill the sense of not-littering at public places, we can save a lots of money in cleaning the beach very often. Also cleaning people can do a more productive work elsewhere. Also we get a clean beach. I would like to put some hoarings in the beach asking people to "Consider using dustbin" and also would like to put some more dust bins in the beach. Also a public toilet is a must in a beach where people gather in thousands everyday for relaxing including women and children.

Some more garbage collection! at Shivagange,Tumkur District,Karnataka on September 27th,2003

Program Details

Some more garbage collection! After having done a preliminary trek2clean trek to Shivagange in June, its time to get going on a much more larger and intense scale as such is the pollution (mainly plastic) over here.

For those who don't know, this place is about 60km from Bangalore, known for the Shivagange math, but is also famous as a trek route and a great spot for rock climbers. There is a big temple complex at the early part of the hill, then a long trek to a natural spring half way to the top, now part of a temple. Further up there is a long route (steep towards the end) to the top, where there is a huge 'Nandi' carved onto the peak.
Though the stretch seems quite clean initially, there is a lot lot of plastics as we go higher till the spring, and then there is another spot at the peak that is bad.

The plan is as below:

6.30 am Assemble at Victoria Statue, Cubbon Park (near Jewel de Paragon).
6.45 am Departure
8.15 am Reach Shivagange, breakfast time!
9.00 am Start the trek to clean.
12.30 am Break for lunch and some maasti!
3.00 pm Start cleaning again.
5.30 pm Start winding up.
6.00 pm Head back home.
7.45 pm Back at Victoria statue.

Costs should be within Rs. 175/-, the balance money will go into the trek2clean corpus. To confirm your participation, you have hand over an advance of Rs. 175/- advance to Sheila Castelino or one of the group members mentioned below by 23rd Sept Tuesday evening latest.

Breakfast, Lunch, juice breaks and energy packs will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothing - tracks/ cargo pants, T shirts. Light colors would be ideal. Please wear sports shoes which are comfortable for long walks, but also good for climbing.

Please bring the following. It would be preferable to carry these items in a SMALL BACK PACK, so that your hands are free.

- 2 bottles of 2 liters of water. This is a must.
- cap - recommended, or maybe a bandana or something to protect you from the heat.
- torch with batteries (good to carry for any trek).
- sun tan lotion - advisable
- gloves - advisable
- sun glasses -optional
- camera - optional

You will be handed a sack and a prong to collect garbage. We also have some other tools to help us.
This is booze free trek.
Await your confirmations by return mail, by 23rd Sept (Tuesday) latest!

It will be nice you can post the attached notice about the trek on the notice board in your office / gym / dance class / apartment block / supermarket / college...etc, thanks! Please spread the word around and get as many people as you can to join in.
