Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink - seems like an apt description
for scenes in a movie like "Water World"? If we are not careful enough, it will
be applicable to our daily lives in not so distant a future. We are not kidding
nor are we trying to scare you.We are just trying to make you more aware
of the problem that could be just around the corner!!
Here are some facts:
99.5 per cent of all fresh water in the world is in glaciers and ice caps.
Our rivers, lakes and water reserves are already getting polluted because of the ever-increasing
industrial waste, plastic bags and all-sorts-of garbage which is the output of an
advancing civilization.
Our population is increasing at an alarming rate.
Every year, skies overhead open up to yield a fresh supply of water
and we lose much of it to seas and gutters. Hello, hasn't anyone ever heard of
water harvesting?
Are we expecting water to be automatically generated to satisfy our needs
in future?
Steps:
Don't stare with a "What can I do?" look at the screen. There is a lot
that you can do and like charity it should begin at home.
Follow these Green Tips
on how to conserve water.
After washing or soaking rice, dal and vegetables, use the water to water the plants.
It boosts their growth and saves the water.
After every use of the tap, make sure that you close it tightly.
If you come across any leaking tap at a public place
like washrooms in theatres or hotels, close it tightly and urge the people
concerned to get it fixed soon.
In cities:
Tanks cannot be built on the terrace of buildings but closed tanks can be built to save
rain water in empty space (if any is available) surrounding the building.
Every building/society should be allocated a certain quota of water for its daily use.
Housing complexes exceeding this quota should be charged more for it. The money can be used
for the maintenance of water pipelines in the locality.
