The cabbie applied brakes sharply and heaped the choicest of abuses that he could think of when
the stray cow walking serenely by the side of the road suddenly leapt into the cab’s path.
“Rasta hai ya janwarghar! Maloom nahi kaha kaha se chale aate hai. Gaddiyon ki kami hai kya is
shehar me ke ab gaay bhainse bhi raste pe chalne lagi hai.”
It is not uncommon to share the roads with cows, horses, dogs and other animals in India – be it
the villages or the metros. Most of the times animals such as cows and horses are left to find
food on the streets by their owners whereas most of the dogs are stray ones. The stray cattle not
only create hurdles in the traffic but also add on to the garbage by rummaging through the dustbins
and dropping excreta.
Steps:
An effort to curb the menace of stray cattle (big and small) including pigs and goats is being
carried out by the Nuisance Detectors of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai. Check
their site for information on
“Removal of dead animals” and “Impounding of stray cattle”.
The Citizen Groups in every locality should contact the authorities
to urge them to implement similar steps.
